FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers on accuracy, timing, file formats and importing custom products.

General

What is digital templating?

Digital templating means recording the exact shape of a space or item as precise 3D points rather than making a physical cardboard or timber template. The points are turned into a drawing that can be used by designers, fabricators and CNC machinery.

What do you actually measure?

Walls, corners, edges, openings, ceiling heights, floor levels and fixture positions. For templating we also capture contours, cut-outs and curves.

How accurate is it?

The Leica vPen we use is specified by the manufacturer to ±1 mm at 10 m, and the sensor’s reflectorless 3D point accuracy is specified at 1.0 mm at 10 m. Results depend on site conditions and the measuring task. See the accuracy note below.

What equipment do you use?

A Leica iCON iCS50 robotic construction sensor, a wireless Leica vPen, and Leica iCON trades software on a tablet.

Will you damage my walls or surfaces?

No. The pen touches the surface lightly and nothing is attached, drilled or marked. We can measure on any surface, including glass.

Process

How long does a site visit take?

Most kitchens and bathrooms take [X hours]. Larger or more complex jobs take longer and are quoted accordingly.

How soon do I get my files?

Typically within [X business days] of the site visit.

Do I need to be home?

Someone should be present to give access.

What should be ready before you arrive?

Clear access to the areas being measured. For benchtop templating, base cabinets should be installed in their final position. We’ll confirm what we need when you book.

What format do the files come in?

PDF drawings and CAD files (for example DXF). Other formats on request.

Overseas sourcing

Can you help me buy from a manufacturer in China?

We supply the accurate measurements and drawing package a manufacturer needs. Choosing the supplier, product compliance, import costs and quality remain your responsibility.

Is it legal to import any product I like?

No. Some products are restricted or banned (for example, engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs cannot be imported), and many items need Australian certification. See our sourcing guide and check with the relevant authority.

Will it definitely fit if I use your data?

Our data removes the most common cause of fitting errors, which is inaccurate measurement. Fit also depends on the manufacturer building to the drawing, tolerances, and the installation. We recommend checking the supplier’s shop drawings against our data before production.

Do you guarantee the factory’s work?

No. We are not the manufacturer and have no control over how it is made.

Equipment verification

Can you check that equipment has been built within tolerance?

Yes, within the limits of our equipment. We measure the item, compare it with the drawing and report each dimension against its tolerance.

How tight a tolerance can you check?

The Leica vPen is specified to ±1 mm at 10 m, so we suit tolerances comfortably larger than that, such as fabricated frames, structures and large assemblies. Precision machined parts with very tight tolerances need specialist metrology equipment, and we’ll tell you if a job is outside what we can do.

Is your report a certificate of conformity?

No. It is a dimensional measurement report.

Can you measure large items at the factory or port?

Often yes, subject to safe access and a clear line of sight.

Pricing and booking

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on the job. See our pricing page or request a free quote.

Do you charge for quotes?

No.

Which suburbs do you service?

Greater Melbourne, including [list suburbs]. Contact us for locations outside this area.

What if I’m not sure whether you can help?

Send us a message with a photo. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s something we can help with.

Accuracy note: Accuracy figures are the equipment manufacturer’s published specifications for the instrument under stated conditions. Actual accuracy of deliverables depends on site conditions, the nature of the surfaces and the measuring task.
