Importing direct from a manufacturer is more accessible than ever. But custom products carry risks that off-the-shelf items don’t.

  1. Get your site data right. The factory builds exactly what the drawing says. Accurate measurements are your best protection against an expensive mistake.
  2. Check what’s legal to import. Some products are prohibited or restricted. For example, engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs have been prohibited imports in Australia since 1 January 2025. Confirm any material before ordering.
  3. Check Australian standards. Plumbing products generally need certification such as WaterMark. Electrical items need Australian approvals. Safety glass must meet Australian standards.
  4. Work out the true landed cost. Add freight, insurance, duty where applicable, GST, customs broker fees, port charges and delivery. Compare with local pricing, including warranty and support.
  5. Verify the supplier. Ask for business registration, references and photos of similar work, and use traceable payment methods in stages rather than paying everything up front.
  6. Approve shop drawings against your site data. This single step prevents many problems.
  7. Inspect on arrival. Check goods against the drawings before installation and photograph any damage straight away.
