If you’ve ever had a benchtop made, you might have seen a fabricator arrive with strips of timber or cardboard and glue them into the shape of your benchtop. That’s a physical template. Digital templating does the same job with measurement data.

How digital templating works

A measuring system tracks a wireless pen. Each time the pen touches a corner, edge or contour, the system records the point. Software joins the points into a drawing, and cut-outs, rounded corners and offsets can be added on site. The result is a file a fabricator can use for production.

Benefits

  • Accuracy, because measurements are taken from real points.
  • Speed, because one person can capture a complete kitchen quickly.
  • Fewer errors, because there are no manual conversions.
  • A permanent record, because the digital file can be reused or revised.

What can be templated?

Kitchen benchtops, vanity tops, splashbacks, shower screens, glass panels, custom joinery and metalwork.

Do I need it?

If you’re ordering anything made to measure for an existing space, especially from a supplier who can’t easily visit, it’s worth considering.
