Simple checks you can do yourself

  • Measure both diagonals of a room or alcove; if they differ, the room isn’t square.
  • Use a long straightedge or spirit level on the wall to see if it bows.
  • Check the gap at the top, middle and bottom of cabinet runs.

Limitations of DIY checks

These show that there is a problem, but not its exact size or shape, and that’s what a fabricator or overseas factory needs.

Recording the real shape

A professional measurement system records the position of many points along each wall, floor and ceiling so deviations can be drawn and designed around. Designers can then decide whether to scribe, shim, or adjust the layout.

What to do with the information

Share the measured drawing with your designer, builder and supplier so everyone works from the same facts.
